Natural Climate Solutions - Wetlands

Eagle Lake First Nation

IMG_2519.JPEG

Eagle Lake First Nation abides by the Migisi Sahgaigan Maanachi Totaa-Aki Declaration that outlines their responsibility to protect the natural environment through Manitou Inaakonig-ewin – the Creator’s Sacred Laws and Teachings. As part of the Nation's interest in protecting wetlands within their Traditional Territory, EnCompass supported their Lands Department in undertaking a project to assess wetlands within the Eagle Lake and Eagle River watersheds, both in terms of their ability to help mitigate climate change impacts, as well as their ability to support wild rice. This included the collection of Indigenous Knowledge on wetlands, water level fluctuations and wild rice, as well as assessing the carbon content of wetland soil/sediment.  The Ducks unlimited protocol for Rapid Carbon Sequestration Assessments of Wetlands was followed and the results used to advocate for wetland protection, a high priority for community members.
